The Republic of Slovenia is a country in Central Europe and since 2004 a member state of the European Union. It borders Italy to the west by the Adriatic Sea to the southwest, Croatia to the south and east, Hungary to the northeast and north to Austria.
It has a population of 2,009,000 inhabitants. Some 400,000 Slovenians living abroad, mainly in Italy, Austria and the United States.
Present-day Slovenia was formed on 25 June 1991 to independence from Yugoslavia, after a relatively short armed conflict called War of the ten days the army opposed to the former federation.
In 2004 joined the European Union.
Slovenia in 2007 is part of the Eurozone, the Schengen area, the Council of Europe and is being part of the OECD.
In ancient times the present territory of Slovenia was covered by the Culture Urnfield later in the Iron Age was developed in the region Hallstatt.
In the second century BC, the historical sources record the existence of the Kingdom of Noricum in the Eastern Alps. This Kingdom maintained friendly relations with the Romans, who sold him iron. In the fourth century Noricum was divided into two Roman provinces Ripense and Noricum Noricum Mediterraneum, the latter also called Interrior Noricum. While the first of these provinces was invaded by Germanic tribes to the Fall of the Roman Empire, the second was able to maintain their social structure and after the occupation of the Ostrogoths declared its own independence
Some believe that the ancestors of the current Slovenian Slavs settled in this area around the sixth century. But there are others who claim to be descended from the indigenous peoples of the Eastern Alps.
